How Often to Change Your Filter

Houston HVAC Services · 7 min read

The generic advice is "every 90 days," but Houston's specific dust, pollen, and humidity conditions often call for a different schedule than what's printed on the filter box.

The Generic Guideline

Most filter manufacturers suggest 60-90 days for a standard 1-inch filter in an average household with no pets and no unusual dust sources. This guideline is developed based on national average conditions, which don't necessarily reflect what a filter actually experiences in a Gulf Coast climate running near-continuous cooling for six or more months a year.

Why Houston Is Different

Houston's heavy pollen seasons, regional dust levels, and long cooling season — meaning your system runs and pulls air through the filter far more hours per year than in milder climates — often mean filters clog faster here than the national average timeline suggests. A filter that might last 90 days in a moderate climate with a system that only runs occasionally can reach the same level of clogging in half that time here.

Spring pollen season adds another layer to this. Houston's pollen counts, particularly from oak and other regional trees, can be significant enough to visibly clog a filter within just a few weeks during peak season, regardless of how recently it was replaced.

A More Realistic Houston Schedule

The Simple Visual Test

Hold the filter up to a light source. If you can't see light passing through it clearly, it's time to replace it — this simple test is more reliable than any fixed calendar schedule, since actual conditions vary so much from month to month and household to household.

Higher-MERV Filters: A Special Consideration

Higher-efficiency filters (MERV 13 and above) capture smaller particles, which is great for air quality but means they can restrict airflow more as they load up with debris. These filters sometimes need more frequent monitoring than their "longer lifespan" marketing suggests, particularly in systems not originally designed with high-MERV filtration in mind.

What Happens If You Wait Too Long

A severely clogged filter restricts airflow, which can freeze your evaporator coil, strain your blower motor, and in furnaces, potentially trigger safety shutoffs. It's one of the most preventable causes of service calls we see.
